Estate Romana

June – September

This marvellous Italian event is a fusion of entertainment, music, film, sport, theatre and kids activities; all spread out over the parks, squares and art galleries that make Rome the cultural capital it is. For six weeks, concerts will be held both at the Villa Celimontana and the Auditorium Music Park, and believe us: nothing beats the cool breeze that descends on Rome with nightfall, making one forget about the heat that strikes the city during the day. Especially at the Auditorium, performances from well-known artists can be heard, such as Youssou N’Dour. Patti Smith, Lou Reed, John Legend and Pink. But if you’re after something more intimate, or less crowded, the villas and parks nearby often have random performances or expositions laid out under the trees which are a real treat if you can find them. One of these parks is the Villa Ada, where artists from all over the world gather and sing on a tiny stage beside the lake. The music is amazing, the singers relatively unknown and the atmosphere charged with energy.

In the name of the Rome Summer Festival, the Cabaret Festival will take place on Oppio Hill, right next to the Colosseum. Like plays from ancient Romanic times, the city’s ruins provide a dramatic backdrop to many of the activities that take place throughout the Festival, like the live orchestra that plays at the Piazza del Campidolgio.

And huge, open-air screens are put up in Vittorio Emmanuele Square, on the Gianicolo Hill in Trastevere and on the River Tiber Island, where popular films are projected in front of hundreds strewn on the grass of Rome’s parks. Usually the films are Italian or dubbed in Italian, but if you’re lucky you might just find a new classic movie; and what better way to spend your evening than on the Isola Tiburtina, in a beautiful, ancient, Roman church watching a black and white oldie?

If you don’t want to miss all these incredible events – the ballet in smokey, old theatres; listening to the saxophone pull at your heartstrings with the Colloseum in sight; or rocking out in a park to an up-and-coming punk band – then we recommend you visit Rome and stay in one of our bellisimo Rome apartments!
